The Danger Signs of Cauda Equina Syndrome

Injury to a disc, or a herniated disc can be a hugely painful experience, which hinders daily activity. However, such an injury can also be dangerous as it risks serious nerve injury.

If crushed, for example in the case of an injury to a disc, the Cauda Equina can become damaged. If the damage is identified early enough however, it can be treated.  However if is not diagnosed promptly the damage can be permanent causing significant life-altering limitations such as back pain, leg weakness, bladder and bowel weakness and sexual disfunction.

Just as with the onset of a stroke, it is important that everyone knows the warning signs of injury and acts fast whenever they notice them.

Danger Signs of Damage to the Cauda Equina

S Saddle Anaesthesia

Any loss of feeling around the buttocks, anus and genitals

P Pain

Severe nerve pain in back and/or down one or both legs

I Incontinence

Bladder or Bowel incontinence or difficulty going to the toilet

N Numbness

Lack of sensation or weakness in the legs

E Emergency

All of the symptoms above could be a symptom of Cauda Equina – please contact your GP or A&E department immediately if you are experiencing them.

Without urgent treatment the damage can be permanent.
